Baffa callously disowns his teenage children, Ribado and Halimah, and divorces their mother because they are more interested in learning about the world than following the traditions and prescribed roles of their tribe. Out of pity, Mr Danladi adopts Halimah and helps her complete a degree, which she uses to achieve great success. Baffa, who neglects his daughter for more than twenty years, eventually loses his fortune, returns to her and asks her to renounce Mr Danladi and recognise him again as her father.
If you were in Halimah’s shoes, what would you do to resolve this complex conflict between your biological father and your adoptive father?

In his debut novel AFRICAN COWBOY author U.D. Abdulkareem showcases not just his ability to tell an amazing story but bring up some universal themes as well.

The book takes you into the life of African cowmen Bappa who is not just balancing his business affairs but his two families as well. In the middle of the power struggle are his children by the wife that he seems to have abandoned. They see the success of their father and want to educate themselves so they can better their opportunities for the future. This is not something that Bappa approves us and using his authority and position he brutally takes out his anger on them, treating them as dead to him because of their choice.

Though hurtful this doesn't stop Ribado and Halimah from moving ahead and in a twist of fate the importance of their education and pursuing their own lives comes back full circle with the father who abandoned them.

African Cowboy edition by UD Abdulkareem Children eBooks Reviews

Sometimes you just have to remove your hat, shake your head, say "Wow!" and admire someone. U.D. Abdulkareem, author of African Cowboy, is one of those people. U.D. is the only person in his Nigerian village who can read. Not only can he read, but he can write--and has written a YA novel about the safety net education provides to struggling people around the world. He is clear in his message that education nurtures resilience, which is necessary to overcome and survive outdated customs, natural events, separation, death, and more. Because of his deep understanding of the advantages education provides to generations down the line, he confronts literacy and illiteracy head on with passion and honesty.

U.D. Abdulkareem's story of fighting for equality through schooling is compelling and enriching. His love of learning is palpable and laudable. His characters are easy to relate to; they share their struggles and lessons intelligently and fervently. African Cowboy is an exciting read that is rooted in real struggle, true inequality, and genuine injustice.

English is not the author's first language, and as a result readers will find words that are misused and editorial/proofing mistakes. African Cowboy would have benefited from professional editing. Even so, the message remains strong and the impact remains powerful.
